A NOISE WITHIN Pasadena – a New Season, a New Home, a Landmark Building

A NOISE WITHIN launched its 20th anniversary season Oct. 29 in its new 33,000 square foot home in a Pasadena landmark with a “Welcome Home; Inaugural Opening Night Gala.” An elegant dinner followed Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night, Or What You Will,” raising more than $120,000 for the theater and its “Classics Live! Education Outreach programs.

A Noise Within Pasadena resides in the former Stuart Pharmaceutical building, considered a mid-century masterpiece by celebrated architect Edward Durell Stone, whose internationally-recognized buildings include Radio City Music Hall in New York, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.  The new three-story theater. designed by John Berry Architects, retains the building’s original façade, but the completely rebuilt interior now includes offices, rehearsal space, a classroom, storage areas for costumes, props and scenery and lots more stalls in the restrooms than previously. (A big thank you for the latter, on behalf of female theater-goers.)  According to officials, parking is abundant too.

More spacious than the theater’s original Glendale venue, the new A Noise Within is now able to increase its audience capacity from 25,000 to 50,000 people each year.  Also because of the expanded space, officials said the company’s education program will be able to accommodate twice the number students as before.

Although ANW specializes in presenting the classics, director Julia Rodriguez-Elliott has set “Twelfth Night, or What You Will” in Cuba against a backdrop of a Caribbean carnival.  Rodriguez-Elliott and Geoff Elliott are ANW’s co-founders and co-artistic directors.

John Rabe, host and producer of KPCC’s “Off Ramp,” emceed the dinner, with speakers including the Elliotts, Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard and David DiCristofaro, president of Wells Fargo Greater San Gabriel Community Bank. Wells Fargo sponsored the evening.

Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night, or What You Will” will run at A Noise Within Pasadena until Dec. 16. For more information click here or call (626) 356-3100.
