Alexis Mabille Haute Couture Spring 2012

Alexis Mabille: An Eye-Popping Parade for Spring/ Summer 2012 Haute Couture

Never mind that three weeks have passed since the Paris haute couture shows. The message that color is on the spring agenda has stayed with me, most vividly in my memories of the Jan. 23 Alexis Mabille show.

On entering the opulent salons at the Shangri-la Hotel in Paris for the Alexis Mabille haute couture show, the designer’s sister – model Myrthe Mabille – greeted guests in a Mabille version of a little black dress, in this case trimmed in abundant yellow ribbons.

Mabille called his show “Color Therapy” and in the program’s one-sheet, quoted the author Marcel Proust from his novel, “Remembrance of Things Past.”

“It’s only women who do not know how to dress that are afraid of colors. A dress may be brilliant without vulgarity and quiet without being dull.”

Mabille wasn’t kidding. Taking Proust’s directive to heart, his models not only wore gowns and cocktail dresses in eye-popping colors, but they also had color-matched gloves, painted faces and towering floral chapeaux. The popular French designer included mostly evening gowns, lovely details such as flowers dangling in back or an embroidered lace insert.

Among guest were French actress Aurélie-Lilou Fogli and designer, model and fashion muse Ines de la Fresange, who arrived in a newsboy’s cap and photography gear to document the shows for the French magazine, Madame Figaro.
