Alexis Mabille Spring Summer 2013 Haute Couture

Sheer Beauty – Literally – at Alexis Mabille, plus a Couture Costume for Dita Von Teese

Not surprisingly, burlesque artist Dita Von Teese sat front row at the Alexis Mabille spring summer 2013 haute couture show in Paris. Coincidentally I originally met Von Teese and Mabille together at a grand affair at Versailles that closed the fall winter 2011-2012 shows and learned then that they were friends.

At this presentation, as mentioned in my Jan. 22 story for “All the Rage” in the Los Angeles Times, the always-glamorous Von Teese said she was having Mabille make her a tuxedo for her next striptease show. Unlike the typical haute couture tuxedo (if there is such a thing,) hers will come off in pieces.

As I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen Von Teese perform  - at a charity affair, the opening of a photo show and twice at a private party –  no doubt the tuxedo will disappear in dramatic fashion.  And speaking of showing skin, Mabille had two gowns this season in his collection of spectacular confections that were completely sheer on top.

The Jan. 21 show, which featured lace, tulle and lots of candy colors, was the designer’s first since being named an official haute couture house. Such a designation is a high honor for a fashion designer in France.

For those unfamiliar with the term’s meaning, “haute couture” translates literally as “high sewing,” meaning “high fashion.” Such garments are not just high quality, but also made to measure, as opposed to bought off the rack.

Taken seriously in France, the haute couture club of top-of-the-line designers has a mere 14 members, including among others, Chanel, Dior and Jean Paul Gaultier. The 4 correspondent members includes Valentino, Giorgio Armani and Elie Saab.

From Los Angeles, Sutton Stracke, Anne Crawford and Cameron Silver were among those there for the show. In a conversation beforehand, I learned that Silver – the proprietor of the vintage boutique “Decades” on Melrose – has added to his fashion empire.

Silver said he has taped 12 episodes of a new reality TV show, based on the world of “Decades,” which will begin Mar. 6 on the Bravo network. One episode, he said, features Phyllis Diller in her last TV appearance.

In addition, Silver’s book “Decades: A Century of Fashion” has now been released in France. We all celebrated later that night with a book-signing at Moynat, a traditional luxury leather goods shop in Paris.
