amfAR LA Inspiration Gala
The event: Miley Cyrus and Rihanna ran off with the headlines at the Oct. 29 black-tie amfAR L.A. Inspiration Gala. Rihanna presented the award to the night’s honoree, fashion designer Tom Ford, while Cyrus took the stage as the newly anointed spokeswoman for MAC Viva Glam, one of the event’s sponsors. It was their daring Tom Ford gowns that caught commenters’ attention — Cyrus in a black strappy body-revealing number and Rihanna in a leg-baring split-skirt dress with bejeweled pasties on the bodice.
The benefit for amfAR’s AIDS research programs drew support from plenty of other notables too. As a side note, more about Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, their dresses and their generosity…
For all the uproar created by their revealing gowns – designed, by the way, by the extraordinary Tom Ford – they both looked fantastic in person. Moreover, the two of them couldn’t have been much more generous to the cause.
As mentioned in my Los Angeles Times story, Rihanna paid $135,000 for earrings and a Willy Rizzo photo at the auction and then ponied up an additional $100,000 donation. At $300,000, Cyrus was high-bidder for a Ryan McGinley photo and then she gave another $200,000 to amfAR.
“I’m also a little drunk,” Cyrus said, on taking the podium. “That’s why I’m half a million deep.”
She then spoke with enthusiasm about her new role as 2015 spokesperson for MAC Viva Glam, in which she planned to do more than design lipstick colors. (All proceeds from her MAC Viva Glam collection go toward the fight against HIV/AIDS.)
“I wanted to go beyond just getting to where this super space cadet shade that I obsessively created with you guys,” she said (to MAC’s John Demsey, who introduced her). Apologizing “for how many times I went back and forth,” she expressed her wish to start a global conversation about prevention, especially with young people, and let those affected by the illness know that her army of family, friends fans are “fighting with them so that they never have to feel alone.”
