Angel Awards for Jane Lynch and Giada De Laurentiis

Giada De Laurentiis and Jane Lynch Receive Angel Awards from Bryce Dallas Howard and Project Angel Food Founder Marianne Williamson

“Glee” star Jane Lynch and celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis were honored Aug. 10 at the Angel Awards Gala. The event benefited Project Angel Food, which provides meals for people affected by HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses.

Bryce Dallas Howard’s Tribute to Giada De Laurentiis…

A star-studded affair, Bryce Dallas Howard arrived with husband, actor Seth Gabel, to present the award to De Laurentiis, the Howard family’s private chef during her teen years. Judging from her enthusiasm in describing the Food Network luminary, Howard – the daughter of director Ron Howard – was clearly thrilled to take on the task.

“She was like a Disney princess coming in to say, ‘Hello, what would you like to eat today?’” said the beautiful star of “The Help” and “Hereafter.” With all due modestly, she described herself as “chunky” at the time.

Later, in her speech during formal ceremonies, she said, “I was a 17-year old redhead who was 20-plus pounds overweight and didn’t have a boyfriend. So it was easy to become obsessed, when Giada De Laurentiis is in your home.”

“The success that Giada has made for herself is truly exciting for me and my family,” she added. “If I’m being totally honest, my family has 20 things that we’re really proud of, that you can’t get us to shut up about, and the fact that Giada was our personal family chef is truly one of them.”

The Angel Awards Crowd…

Also mingling amid the 400 guests were Nolan Gerard Funk, “Glee’s” head of the Dalton Academy Warblers, and Mei Melancon of “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Funk is now appearing in the controversial new film, “The Canyons.”

(Among other reasons for the controversy, “The Canyons” stars Lindsay Lohan and adult film personality James Deen.)

“When there’s controversy, it’s worth checking out,” said Funk.

Also on hand were Eliza Dushku of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” former Laker Rick Fox of “He Got Game,” Meredith Baxter of “Family Ties” and Carrie Keagan of VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live With Carrie Keagan.”

More were Sara Rue of “Malibu Country,” Tricia Helfer of “Killer Women” and “Battlestar Galactica,” Christian LeBlanc of “The Young and the Restless,” Geri Jewell of “Deadwood,” Lisa LoCicero of “General Hospital,” fitness guru Richard Simmons, “Sex and the City” creator Darren Star, and “Web Therapy” creators Dan Bucatinsky and Don Roos.

For the evening, the Hollywood kitchen had been transformed into a gala venue, via sunflower-topped tables and lights strung high overhead. There, beneath the stars, project Angel Food chefs and volunteers served a scrumptious meal using produce from the organization’s community gardens.

Praise for Jane Lynch and a Primal Philosophy…

From the podium, charity founder Marianne Williamson called Lynch “one of America’s wise women,” saying, “She stands up in her truth.” Williamson then praised Lynch, and not just for her acting talent.

“As interesting as (the characters) are, and as great as she is (playing them), I’ve never seen one as cool, or as great a character as Jane Lynch herself. When Jane Lynch speaks, I listen.”

Lynch accepted the award – appropriately enough, given the cause – a salad bowl, from Williamson, thankful, she said, “to be mentioned in the same breath as you and to share your name on a salad bowl.”

Of the cause, Lynch said, “There is nothing more ‘primally’ loving than feeding a person,” before confessing to the audience that the word ‘primally’ doesn’t actually exist.

“Is primally a word? No, it is not, but for the purposes of the point I’m trying to make, let’s just say that it is,” she said.

Continuing, linguistic accuracy aside, Lynch made the point with her customary good cheer, of the importance of feeding others, by saying, “It’s a simple act, and it’s so powerful that it shoots love and light into the cells of everyone involved.”

She then concluded the thought, saying, “Let us all primally love each other, forever and ever. Amen.”
