Anti Defamation League Deborah Awards 2012

Jillian Barberie Reynolds Hosts ADL Deborah Awards, Going to Mayim Bialik, Renee White Fraser, Debra Wong Yang

Jillian Barberie Reynolds of FOX TV’s “Good Day LA” was so touched that the Anti-Defamation League called on her to emcee the Deborah Awards that tears came to her eyes as she thanked the organization for the invitation.

Wiping away tears, she turned to Mayim Bialik – one of the night’s three honorees – just after the actress from “The Big Bang Theory,” “Blossom” and “Beaches” had accepted her award. (In the latter film, Bialik played Bette Midler’s character as a child.)

“You make everybody laugh,” Reynolds noted.  “I make myself cry.”

This year, in addition to Bialik, honors went to social psychologist Renee White Fraser, founder of the top advertising agency, Fraser Communications, and attorney Debra Wong Yang, a partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and a former U.S. Attorney, appointed by President George W. Bush.

Presenters, respectively, were entertainment attorney Shep Rosenman of Katz, Golden Rosenman; Matt Toledo, chief executive and publisher of the Los Angeles Business Journal and Jim McDonnell, Chief of Police in Long Beach.

Many guests at the Apr. 26 affair, held at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, chose to dress in bright spring colors, but given the achievements of the honorees, all thoughts of hats were of a figurative, rather than literal, nature.

In his presentation, for example, Rosenman pointed out Bialik’s degree in neuroscience, her book “Beyond the Sling” and her contributions to the Jewish parenting website “Kveller.com,” among her accomplishments other than acting. (She also joined “The Big Bang Theory” cast to sing excerpts from “Hair” at an Alzheimer’s fundraiser.)

“She wears many hats,” he said, “not just the floppy ones she wore as a teen star as ‘Blossom.’”

Likewise, White Fraser and Wong Yang were lauded for leadership in their professions and their civic contributions.

Named for the historic biblical figure, known for her courage, wisdom and leadership, Deborah Awards are given annually to outstanding women for their professional and philanthropic dedication to the Los Angeles community. The event raised more than $200,000 for ADL programs to fight anti-Semitism and bigotry.

Sharyn Nichols and Jessica Babrick served as co-chairs with the committee including Brianna Abrams, Faith Cookler, Sheila Frost, Michelle Gold, Earl Greinetz, Ivy Kagan Bierman, Diane Lazar, Leah Mendelsohn, Ruth Moss, Nicole Mutchnik, Nancy Parris Moskowitz, Galite Schafer, Loren Stephens, Lenore Wax, Daniel Weiss and Kim Zeitlin Gold. Honorary co-chairs were Linda LoRe, Peter Roth and Charlie Woo.
