Art of Elysium Gala 2014

For Linda Perry, visionary of The Art of Elysium‘s annual “Heaven” gala, sound provided the theme.
“Basically for me, heaven is evoking emotions through sound,” said Perry in an interview prior to the affair. A singer, composer and record producer, she has written hit tunes by such recording superstars as Christina Aguilar, Gwen Stefani, Pink, Celine Dion, Adam Lambert and others.
“I see the healing aspects of music,” Perry said. “Music can change people.”
So, for the Jan. 11 gala, presented by Mercedes-Benz, she pre-recorded the voices of hospitalized children, doctors, nurses, friends and family members chanting “om.” Then by dropping the needles on the gala’s record player centerpieces, the venue vibrated with sound.
“Who thinks like that?” said Anna Kendrick a few nights later, still talking about the beauty of the evening.
Guests dined on vegan cuisine, which served as the only color in the monochromatic decor, which consisted of uncovered, unvarnished wooden tables.
“I want people to see the beauty of food,” Perry said. “Food is supposed to be vibrant, fresh, filled with color.”
Held at the Skirball Center in Los Angeles, the gala honored Ali Larter of “Heroes” and comedian Hayes MacArthur, both active volunteers in The Art of Elysium’s programs. The charity, founded by Jennifer Howell, brings creativity into the lives of hospitalized children through a network of artists, actors, songwriters, fashion designers and others.
Taking place the night before the Golden Globes, the event traditionally attracts much of young Hollywood. Guests this year included Johnny Depp, , Amber Heard, David Arquette, Elijah Wood, Kate Bosworth, Michael Polish, Kelly Osbourne, Amy Smart, Carter Oosterhouse, Joe Manganiello, Camilla Belle, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Busy Philipps, Ashley Madekwe, Rose McGowan, Topher Grace, Dave Annable, Odette Annable, James Marsden, Paz Vega, Shanola Hampton, Michelle Trachtenberg, Sam Trammell, Cameron Silver, Sutton Stracke, Teresa Palmer, Shepard Fairey and Ryan Kavanaugh, chief executive of Relativity Media, among many others.
Performances took place throughout the night by Linda Perry, Steven Tyler, Rain Phoenix, Evan Rachel Wood, The Smokin’ Knights, Gingghar Shankar and Micah Sheiner. Perry’s brother Jay Perry prepared the gourmet vegan cuisine.
Including tickets priced from $5,000 per person, a live auction and additional support from Tweezerman and Relativity Media, organizers reported $1.8 million in proceeds.
