Assistance League Polo Party
Between the Kardashian wedding and Will & Kate’s visit, Santa Barbara has had quite a summer.
The very weekend that the Kardashian clan was capturing international attention (or should I say, “kapturing”) and creating traffic jams (likewise “kreating”) in and out of the area, an elegant 28-year tradition was quietly taking place at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. The event: the Aug. 21 Golden Mallet Polo Tournament, presented by the Pre-School & Kindergarten Auxiliary of the Assistance League of Southern California.
Sponsored by Gloria and Glen Holden, along with Nanci Denney Bergin, the Assistance League Polo Party attracted 170 guests for lunch and the polo matches. Gloria Holden founded the luncheon for ALSC’s Learning Center for Young Children; Glen Holden, a trustee of the Polo Club, is former US Ambassador to Jamaica.
And as they had during Prince William and Kate Middleton’s recent visit to this same polo field, the Holdens welcomed guests to the luncheon tent, many of them sporting hats for this occasion, too. Still asked about the royal couple nearly two months later, Gloria Holden called them, “charming – surprisingly down to earth.”
“We love this event,” said Weston, estimating proceeds at $50,000. “Even in this economy, it’s always a success.”
