The event: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles hosted a TV Tea, honoring nominees for the Primetime Emmy Awards from the UK, British Commonwealth and – not to discriminate – the USA as well.

Presented by BBC America and Jaguar, the BAFTA LA bash brought out L.A.’s British community and plenty of American TV VIPs.

The ambiance: Taking place on the Garden Terrace of the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills on Aug. 23 – in other words, a warm sunny day – a sign reading “Los Angeles Climate” pointed to the patio, while a sign saying “London Climate” steered partygoers into an air-conditioned reception area.

The crowd: There for the traditional high tea – plus cupcakes, cocktails and the chance to chat – were Minnie Driver, Michelle Dockery, Lizzy Caplan, Anna Chlumsky, Allison Tolman, Joanne Froggatt, Cat Deeley, Uzo Aduba, Joe Morton, Chris O’Dowd, Ashely Madekwe, Jacqueline Bisset, Christiane Seidel, James Frain, Niecy Nash, Bailey Noble, Betsy Brandt, Cary Elwes, James Tupper, Thomas Sangster, Adrienne Moore and Ken Howard.

More were Claire Holt, Mira Sorvino, Stephen Merchant, Laverne Cox, Joey King, Kevin Dunn, Paris Barclay, RJ Mitte, Sofia Milos, Shohreh Aghashloo, Vincent de Paul, J. Alexander, producers Nigel Lythgoe and his son Simon Lythgoe, writer Noah Hawley, designer Sue Wong, and Kiernan Shipka, who clearly has grown up, as of course did her character on “Mad Men.”

Quotes of note: “We’re celebrating the British nominees today and this year the number happens to be quite overwhelming,” said BAFTA board member Vivian Mayer. “If you look at most of the shows, there is someone from the UK or British commonwealth, whether it’s an actor, producer, show runner or something else.”

Mayer then added, “Everyone here is a winner – when you’re a nominee, you’re a winner.”

“So You Think You Can Dance” producer Nigel Lythgoe offered one explanation for the preponderance of British nominees. “Originally the British went mainly into television while (Americans) went mainly into movies, “ he said, adding, “Now Americans are migrating to television and we’re migrating onto the web.”
