Chanel Presents New Vintage – Haute Couture Style – In a Afternoon Tea Party Setting

On exiting the Chanel fall winter haute couture presentation, French actress Lou Doillon was still marveling over the fairy tale wedding dress – a fantasy in feathers.  (Doillon is the daughter of Jane Birkin, for whom the famous Hermes handbag is named.)

“Now I want to get married,” she said with enthusiasm.

The July 3 show, titled “New Vintage,” drew an abundance of VIPs, among them former First Lady Bernadette Chirac,  author Danielle Steel and her daughters Vanessa Traina and Victoria Traina; director Sofia Coppola; Milla Jovovich of “Resident Evil,” Diane Kruger of “Inglorious Basterds;” Joshua Jackson of “Dawson’s Creek,” Leslie Mann of “Knocked Up,” and actress/model Laetitia Casta.

After strolling past bushes, abloom in Chanel’s signature camelias at the majestic Grand Palais, guests settled into their assigned white wicker armchairs, clustered around tables as though for an afternoon tea. Plates offered macarons and other mini-pastries, and just as people do at tea parties, they took time to chat.

Milla Jovovich talked about her new recording, “Electric Sky,” which she said is now on youtube. A regular at the fashion collections, Jovovich has attended previous shows with her daughter, but not this time. “Sometimes it’s a problem because she always wants to take everything home,” Jovovich said.

Leslie Mann said she left her husband, filmmaker Judd Apatow and family in London, so she could come to Paris for the day of fashion, before they all joined up again for a trip through Italy.

For this season, designer Karl Lagerfeld offered a look back at classic Coco Chanel designs, with tweed suits and dresses in soft shades of pink and gray, along with stunning long gowns, all constructed haute couture style and lavished in handwork.

At the close of the show, Lagerfeld greeted the bride, the glamorous model Lindsey Wixson, in a gown softly feathered from the fluffy neckline to the  billowing pouf of a skirt.
