Chanel Haute Couture Offers Two Brides

Diane Kruger, Hailee Steinfeld, Grimes, Rita Ora and Two Brides Turn Up on the Chanel Couture Beach

Ironically, considering that snow blanketed Paris at the start of haute couture week, Karl Lagerfeld created a sandy beach inside the historic glass-domed exhibition hall for his spring summer 2013 presentation for Chanel.

Surrounded by a tree-lined forest, thick with shrubbery and complete with chirping bird sounds, guests at the Jan. 22 show sat on grandstands of bleached-wood, reminiscent of a boardwalk.

Chanel-watchers have come to expect imaginative shows, as Lagerfeld has showcased new collections at a riding academy at the Bois de Bologne, at a swimming pool with a floating runway and inside a fantasy jet plane. And these were only a few of my favorite Chanel shows.

Still, seeing a beach in mid-winter came as a surprise. So I asked noted architect Peter Marino what he thought. Hard to miss in his usual motorcycle get-up, Marino designs the Chanel stores and said he comes to the shows to get a feel for the theme, rhythm and ambiance.

Looking around at the sand, he deadpanned, “So appropriate in January.”

While most of us stayed bundled up for winter in the unheated hall, several Chanel-clad celebrities left their coats off.

They included actors Diane Kruger of “Inglorious Basterds,” Hailee Steinfeld of “True Grit,” and Clemence Poesy of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows;” musicians Grimes, aka Claire Boucher, and Rita Ora. Others in the grandstands; model Ines de la Fressange and best-selling romance novelist Danielle Steel.

Always ahead of his time, Lagerfeld featured a two-bride finale, and not for the first time at a Chanel couture show. He also did so in fall winter 2001, as pictured below.

This time, in light of the controversy in France surrounding gay marriage, the current show not only ended with two brides, but the pair held hands with a small child, too.  (See the new picture up top.)
