The event: Former First Lady Laura Bush and her daughters, Barbara Pierce Bush and Jenna Bush Hager, were the honorees at the Apr. 28 Colleagues’ annual spring luncheon. Highlighted by informal modeling of jewels by Van Cleef & Arpels and a runway show of the Oscar de la Renta fall collection by designer Peter Copping, the affair at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel benefited the Children’s Institute Inc. in its efforts to end child abuse and neglect.

The designer: At a reception before the official ceremonies, Copping said he felt proud to be presenting his fashions to the group. “Oscar had a very strong relationship with the Colleagues, and it’s very important for me to continue this tradition,” he said.

As an aside, we all lined up, upstairs at the VIP reception to meet Laura Bush and her daughters, who took a few minutes for small talk before posing beside us, while photographer Alex Berliner took pictures. The three couldn’t have been more charming or gracious.

Shortly after, we all went downstairs to see models standing on a pedestal in their dazzling jewels, paired with Oscar de la Renta vintage gowns, which made stunning combinations.

About Oscar: Before his death in October, Oscar de la Renta himself used to attend the Colleagues spring luncheons, and until recent years – before she stopped coming, too – he would escort Nancy Reagan into the ballroom.

Three times I had the great pleasure of speaking one-on-one with Oscar, the last two times before Colleagues shows.  He told charming anecdotes – about his early days with Cristobal Balenciaga, later years with the Reagans, dinner parties with prominent social figures and the Paris haute couture, when he headed up the house of Balmain.

During his last show at Balmain in Paris, I happened to snap a photo of Valentino standing to shake Oscar’s hand as he took his final walk down the runway at the finale. I gave Oscar a copy, which he really enjoyed seeing.

On this day, as Oscar de la Renta’s hand-picked successor, Pater Copping sent a beautiful collection down the runway.

Still, Oscar will be missed.
