Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring 2012 Collection Pays Tribute to Amy Winehouse

The curtain opened to a jazz quartet. As Catherine Deneuve, Dita Von Teese, Charlotte Rampling and Beth Ditto of the rock band, Gossip, watched from the front row, models in black cat’s-eye makeup with hair piled high atop their heads paraded down the runway.

For his spring/ summer haute couture collection, presented Jan. 25 at his Paris atelier, Jean Paul Gaultier paid tribute to the brilliant Amy Winehouse.

Hair and make-up aside, there was probably more variety in this collection than any other this haute couture season. Included in Gaultier’s re-interpretation of the one-of-a-kind singer’s unique style were fashions for any occasion a woman would choose to wear haute couture. Daytime. Night time. The bedroom, too.

Regarding the latter, this being the ultra-creative fashion-forward Jean Paul Gaultier, we’re not talking about standard bra and panty sets. On this runway – following a stunning stream of short jackets, pencil skirts, beautifully tailored suits and color-drenched gowns – models reappeared in their undergarments, which included jeweled and pointed bras, heavy-duty bustiers and more eye-popping lingerie.

Atop their heads, the boudoir-clad models wore veils: black, white and in bright colors While it is traditional to end a couture show with a bride, in this case all the models were brides – marching to the tune of “Rehab” and the strains of “No, no, no!”
