Giorgio Armani PreOscar Party
Never mind that my favorite weather website, accuweather.com, called the forecast “drenching rain” for Feb. 28, the Friday before the Academy Awards. That was the night Roberta Armani hosted a preOscar party at the Giorgio Armani boutique, and nothing could keep the stars away – not even the predicted deluge.

As for me, I popped into three parties that night, and nearly missed this fabulous soiree, as the streets got so swamped that valets couldn’t retrieve the cars at the event immediately prior.
Only those willing to remove their shoes, and wade through the surging ankle-deep water filling the streets, could get their vehicles. So most of us waited for the waters to drain away.
And while I understand that Los Angeles-style flooding doesn’t compare to what has been experienced in other parts of the world, any sort of wet weather in typically-sunny California can certainly put a damper – so to speak – on the end to awards season
Yet no matter — the Giorgio Armani party remained packed with celebrities until the last glass of champagne came around. And as most were clad in the designer’s label, this was a well-dressed gathering indeed.
Staged as a salute to Italian directors Martin Scorcese of “The Wolf of Wall Street” and Paolo Sorrentino of “The Great Beauty,” the affair at the Rodeo Drive boutique drew Cate Blanchett of “Blue Jasmine,” Dianna Agron of “Glee,” Bond Girl Naomie Harris, Olivia Munn of “The Newsroom,” Anna Kendrick of “Pitch Perfect,” Emmy Rossum of “Shameless,” Robert De Niro of “American Hustle,” Alex Pettyfer of “Beastly” and Samuel Jackson of “Pulp Fiction.”
More were Jamie Foxx of “Ray,” Jaimie Alexander of “Thor,” Caitlin Fitzgerald of “Masters of Sex,” Joshua Jackson of “Fringe,” Miles Teller of “The Spectacular Now,” Isabel Lucas of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” Aubrey Plaza of “Safety Not Guaranteed,” Patricia Clarkson of “Friends With Benefits,” Grace Hightower of “Precious,” stylist Rachel Zoe, Disney Media co-chair Anne Sweeney and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment Jim Gianopulos, among others.
Glenn Close, in a Giorgio Armani trouser ensemble, said she’d be on the Oscar stage in Zac Posen, but said she couldn’t reveal her role. “It’s always a surprise,” she said.
And as for the post-Oscar wrap-up… Close had the honor of introducing the “In Memoriam” segment; Sorrentino’s “Great Beauty” won for best foreign language film; and Blanchett took home the Oscar in a nude-colored, richly embellished Giorgio Armani Prive creation, probably the night’s most stunning gown.
