Great British Film Reception

GREAT British Film Reception Honoring The British Nominees Of The 87th Annual Academy Awards
Brits in L.A. Celebrate 40 Nominations in 20 Categories at Pre-Oscar Party

The event: “The Great British Film Reception,” staged at the London Hotel in West Hollywood Feb. 20, paid tribute to the U.K.’s Oscar nominees, this year numbering 40 in 20 categories.

The number includes two made-inBritain best picture nominees, “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything;” leading actress nominees Felicity Jones, Rosamund Pike and Julianne Moore – who is British and American – and two leading actor nominees, Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne.

“Both actors play genius scientists, who changed the world and the way we understand it, which is absolutely wonderful,” said Chris O’Connor, Great Britain’s Los Angeles consul general, who hosted the party along with the British Film Commission.

The scene: Between conversations over cocktails served with flashing red ice cubes, guests checked out director Arnold Schwartzman’s Oscar for the 1982 documentary “Genocide,” and the WWII Enigma machine, referenced in the film, “The Imitation Game.”

Looking similar to a typewriter, the machine – on loan from tech entrepreneur David Bohnett – encrypted secret messages in code, which the film’s characters had to decipher in order to win the war…

As a side note, guests – largely Brits – were in a jubilant mood to see so many U.K. nominees in this year’s running, so many that even without all 40 present for the intros, they could barely fit together on the stage for a group portrait.

The large number of nominees, according to O’Connor, explained the change of venue from the gardens in the official British residence, where last year’s 26 nominees overflowed the stage. This year, though, the flashing red, bright-as-neon ice cubes gave the party a festive touch.

Sponsors included the British Film Commission, Aston Martin, Virgin Atlantic and Delta.
