Great British PreOscar Film Reception

2014 GREAT British Oscar Reception - Red Carpet
British Consul General Chris O’Connor and Director Steve McQueen Host Great British PreOscar Film Reception

Clearly, the British have taken over Hollywood. At least that’s the way things seemed at the Great British PreOscar Film Reception, held Feb. 28, just two days before the Academy Awards.

Co-hosted by Chris O’Connor, L.A.’s British Consul General, and Steve McQueen, director of “12 Years a Slave,” the affair celebrated 26 British nominees in 18 categories for some of the year’s most popular films, including “Gravity,” “Captain Phillips,” “Blue Jasmine,” “American Hustle” and “Philomena.” Click here to read my story in the Los Angeles Times or scroll down to see a few more pictures.

Held in conjunction with the British Film Commission, the event attracted, among others, Scottish football manager and player Alex Ferguson, whose entrance created an even bigger commotion than the TV and movie stars present.

Also on hand were Oscar-winner Helen Mirren, Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins (who, aside from her brilliant performance in “Blue Jasmine,” starred in “Made in Dagenham,” one of my all-time favorite films), Golden Globes-winner Jacqueline Bisset for “Dancing on the Edge,” James Frain of “The White Queen,” Cary Elwes of “The Princess Bride,” Dominic Monaghan of “The Lord of the Rings,” Jared Harris of “Mad Men,” Ed Westwick of “Gossip Girl,” Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje of “Pompeii,” Adepero Oduye of “12 years a Slave,” Gugu Mbatha-Raw of “Belle,” Lenore Thomas of “The Princess Diaries,” the real Philomena Lee, depicted in “Philomena,” and many more.

In addition to introducing nominees and praising their achievements, O’Connor congratulated the crowd for coming despite the night’s heavy downpour, a rare occurrence in Los Angeles.

“It’s fantastic to welcome you all here all to the British residence,” O’Connor said. “It’s unbelievable how many of you have made the journey here, given that we also imported the Great British weather here tonight to try to make it as difficult as we could for you.”
