HollyRod DesignCare Starring Ne Yo
In her dazzling pink Rubin Singer gown, Holly Robinson Peete could be seen from virtually anywhere on the spectacular Malibu estate where the 15th annual Designcare took place. The fundraiser – this year starring Ne-Yo – benefits the HollyRod Foundation, which provides support for people living with autism and Parkinson’s disease.
On the HollyRod DesignCare stage before the night’s official ceremonies, Robinson Peete said it warmed her heart to see so many people coming out on a Saturday night and getting dressed up for the affair. (Check out the photo gallery below for party pictures.)
Joking about her own fashion choice, she said, “I decided to wear something low key tonight, quiet and blend in,” adding, as she took note of the many other, similarly-clad women in the crowd. “I see a lot of people got the pink memo tonight – pink must be the new pink.”
HollyRod DesignCare 2013 was more than a night of awards presentation. The gala also included a full-length runway show of Rubin Singer fashions, accessorized with jewels by Samira 13. In recent years, Singer’s dramatic designs have turned up on Alicia Keyes, Heidi Klum, Lucy Lui, Queen Latifah and Glenn Close, not to mention, Beyoncé, who wore his racy leather leotard for her Super Bowl performance.
As if the fashion show weren’t enough to make HollyRod DesignCare super-special, the Grammy-Award winning Ne-Yo closed the evening with a super-high-energy show, complete with a full complement of back-up dancers.
Ne-Yo delivering a dynamic performance, which included “Let’s Go,” “So Sick,” “Closer” and “Give Me Everything.” (Check the gallery for lots of these pictures, too.)
“Make some noise for HollyRod,” he shouted to the crowd, all happily doing just that.
Lucky for me, Ne-Yo performed on a dance floor opposite the main stage, so while my far-from-the-stage seat didn’t seem so great for the ceremonies, I ended up with a front-of-the-house place for the star attraction. (Ne-Yo’s a particular favorite of mine, and not just for his singing, but also because he, too, turned up at an Atelier Versace haute couture show in Paris during a snowstorm.)
HollyRod DesignCare 2013 began with cocktails on Tamara and Eric Gustavson’s spacious front lawn, where Magic Johnson and his wife, Cookie Johnson, mingled amid the star-studded crowd. At 6’9” in a crisp white suit, the NBA legend was impossible to miss. (He towers over me to such a degree, in fact, that no one can ever seem to back up far enough to get a shot of us together that includes more than just our heads.)
Chatting with Navid Negahban, I learned that although he may have been killed off – as terrorist Abu Nazir in “Homeland” – he just completed the movie, “Words and Pictures.”
There, too, were LeVar Burton of “Perception,” Garcelle Beauvais of “Franklin & Bash,” Regina King of “Southland,” LeVar Burton of “Perception,” Cedric the Entertainer, Leah Remini of “King of Queens,” Viveca A. Fox of “Kill Bill,” Amy Yasbeck of “Wings,” Alan Thicke of “Facts of Life,” Eva LaRue of “CSI: Miami,” Kearran Giovanni of “Major Crimes,” Laila Ali of “Dancing with the Stars” and Steven Bauer of “Ray Donovan.”
More were Nicole Ari Parker of “The Deep End,” Boris Kodjoe of “Undercovers,” Mark Curry of “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” Louis Lombardi of “The Sopranos,” Yvette Nicole Brown of “Community,” Justin Kanew and Zev Glassenberg of “The Amazing Race,” Alex Meneses of “The Cleveland Show,” Nancy O’Dell of “Entertainment Tonight,” Shaun Robinson of “Access Hollywood,” comedian GloZell Green, and actors Vanessa Williams, Segun Oduolowu, Mechelle Epps and Alicia Harris, the voice for the audiobook of “Saltwater Kisses: A Billionaire Love Story,”
Also on scene were U.S. Representative Maxine Waters, sports figures Armend Trnava, Lisa Leslie and Shawne Merriman; celebrity hair stylist Chaz Dean of WEN Hair & Body Care; celebrity stylist Phillip Bloch, producer Frankey Dey, and Style Media president Salaam Coleman Smith.
In ceremonies, Tisha Campbell-Martin received the “HollyRod ‘AUsome’ Mother of the Year Award;” Jordan Pattillo, the “HollyRod4Kids Champion Awards; Jim Mitchell, CEO of FUHU, Inc., the “HollyRod Corporate Compassion Award;” John Ball, the “Matthew T. Robinson, Jr., Award of Courage;” and Michael Strautmanis, the “HollyRod Advocacy Hero Award.”
The HollyRod Foundation was formed by actress Holly Robinson Peete of “21 Jump Street” and “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” and NFL Quarterback Rodney Peete, who had to miss this year’s event.
Sponsors included American Airlines, Outback Steakhouse, Target, WEN by Chaz Dean and Patron.
