JBBBS Champion of Children Awards

Robert C. Aronoff, Barry Vigon and Louis Desser Honored at The Big Event: JBBBS Champion of Children Awards

On Jan. 19, Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles honored three distinguished individuals for their contributions at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills.

This year JBBBS honored attorney Robert C. Aronoff, a member of the JBBBS board of directors for more than 30 years, a Big Brother and an LA County Bar Association Lawyer of the Year. Aronoff, who received the Impact Award, founded the JBBBS scholarship program, which has raised over $1,000,000 for college-bound Little Brothers and Sisters to further their education.

Barry Vigon, director of Camp Max Straus, received the Trailblazer Award. Vigon oversees the activities at the 112-acre facility near Glendale, CA, which serves more than 1,000 campers every summer.

Louis Desser received the Big Brother of the Year Award from Jonah, his Little Brother of seven years at the ceremony. Formerly a regional vice president at Union Bank, Desser is a member of the executive committee of the board of directors of Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles and chairman of the scholarship committee.

The event, co-chaired by Board members Brian Appel, Leslie Kavanaugh and Glen Kraemer, drew a crowd of over 500 attendees.

“This evening is about helping children one-by-one through a variety of mentoring programs. The future lies with the children of our community,” said event co-chair Leslie Kavanaugh.

Following the awards presentation, guests enjoyed a magical dining experience with a variety of culinary delights, created by master chef Jose Andres at the Bazaar Restaurant. And before the evening ended, on behalf of the Edelstein Foundation, Susan and Marvin Rothenberg presented a check in the amount of $10,000 to JBBBS to go directly toward establishing “Harold’s Healthy Eating,” nutritional healthy eating program at Camp Max Strauss.

Celebrating 90 Years of Excellence in Mentoring, Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles specializes in mentoring children through a variety of innovative and highly regarded programs and services, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.
