5 thoughts about fatherhood from Jessica and Jerry Seinfeld

Dad-ness. That‘s the topic Jerry Seinfeld addressed as host of the Los Angeles Fatherhood Lunch to benefit the Good+ Foundation. And that’s what I wrote about in a story about this event that ran in the Los Angeles Times Image section on Sunday, May 15.

As the story isn’t online, too, here’s the essence, along with a few more pictures.

The event raised nearly $200,000 and celebrated the charity’s partnerships with the Children’s Institute’s Project Fatherhood and others, which are working to strengthen families by focusing on fathers.

Coming out for the cause: comedians, actors, writers, talent reps and other supporters, including Bob Saget, Judd Apatow, Michael Richards, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Sean Patrick Thomas, Dan Bucatinsky, Don Roos, Tuck Watkins, Cody Horn, Spike Feresten, Brad Falchuk, talent reps George Shapiro and Bryan Lourd, and Bruce Bozzi, host of the affair at the Palm Restaurant in Beverly Hills.

Here are 4 of Seinfeld’s observations, plus a thought from his wife Jessica, the charity’s founder …

1. An understanding of life’s purpose

One aspect of ‘dad-ness,” Seinfeld said he loves, is the remolding of perspective, mindset and life force that happens when a man has a child in his life. “You just have a different perspective on your daily existence and what it’s about and what is your purpose,” he said.

2. A dad’s highest achievement

Seinfeld said ‘ultimate dad-ness,’ is reached when “your kids think you’re out of it, and you’re irrelevant and you’re useless,” he said, adding, “When the kids are laughing that dad doesn’t know what’s going on, you’ve arrived.”

3. Seriously, the importance of communication

“Guys have problems just like women have problems, but women are naturally disposed to communicate with each other. Men are not,” he said, adding that by sharing problems, “the first thing you find out is that you’re not alone… As soon as you let down with another man, you become stronger.“

4. In summary

“Being a dad is the greatest pain in the ass in the world, if you can possibly be involved in it,” Seinfeld said.

5. And in Jessica Seinfeld’s words

Having founded the charity 15 years ago as Baby Buggy to provide diapers, strollers, cribs and other goods and equipment to families in need, Jessica Seinfeld talked of the added focus on fathers. “We learned almost immediately that if you really want to help the baby you have to help the whole family,” she said. “You have to help the siblings; you have to help the mother and you have to help the father.”

Teary-eyed, she turned to the fathers present who had been through the program, calling them incredible and inspirational. “I’m so grateful to each of you for showing everybody what we do in such a beautiful way.”
