Mark Burnett and Roma Downey Celebrate Joshua Dubois’ Book, “The President’s Devotional,” of Inspirational Messages to Barack Obama

Before Barack Obama became President of the United States, Joshua Dubois sent the Illinois Senator an e-mail offering a spiritual message.

At the launch for Dubois’ new book, “The President’s Devotional,” held Oct. 18 at the Malibu home of power couple Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, Dubois said he did so, never expecting a reply. Yet Obama not only responded to the email, but he also asked the young pastor to send him an e-mail each day.

(Burnett is the producer of “Survivor,” “The Voice,” and other reality TV shows; Downey starred in “Touched by an Angel;” and together, Downey and Burnett produced TV’s super-popular mini-series, “The Bible.”)

Following that early correspondence with Senator Obama, Dubois became President Obama’s spiritual advisor and until early 2013, headed up the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. In February, the New York Times quoted the President as saying Dubois “has been at my side – in word and in prayer – for years now,” continuing, “Every morning (Joshua) sends me via e-mail a daily meditation. A snippet of Scripture for me to reflect on, and it has meant the world to me.”

Following a cocktail reception and an elegant dinner buffet, beautifully prepared by Kathleen Sacchi of “The Fine Art of Events,” Burnett and Downey welcomed guests. Burnett said he and Downey don’t often host such gatherings, but the couple wished to share Dubois’ book of spiritual thoughts with others.

Burnett praised Dubois for his inspirational messages, saying he and Downey read his words together each day, before adding, “If it’s good enough for President Obama…”
