Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation's Inaugural Gala
Dodgers Turn into Fashion Models – all for a good cause

The event: Earvin “Magic” Johnson kicked off the Apr. 16 Inaugural Blue Diamond Gala by thanking the Los Angeles Dodgers for turning up at Dodger Stadium on their day off.

“There are not that many days off, so we really want to give them a round of applause for coming out tonight,” Johnson said, addressing guests at the VIP cocktail reception.

More than just making an appearance, the players, their wives and girlfriends got drafted into service as models in the night’s highlight: a fashion show of Ted Baker London’s spring-summer collection.

The scene: “There are enough Dodger players and alumni here with us tonight that we could honestly play a game if you guys wanted to… “

As an aside, in talking to the players before dinner, we learned – not surprisingly – that this modeling gig would be a new experience for team members.

Clayton Kershaw, for one, said this would be his first – and only – time modeling. (He and his wife Ellen did an excellent job.)

Vin Scully talked of the night’s agenda of “mixing fashion and athleticism,” but added words of caution…

“Tonight you will be shiny bright,” Scully said, addressing the players, and then reminding them of the next day’s game. “Tomorrow,” he said, “I certainly do not want to see any looking in the mirror, primping, and the last thing I want to hear when you take the field is ‘How do I look?'”

Before the fashion parade, Magic Johnson admitted his label of preference is Tom Ford, but as regards the future, he said, “I might wear Ted Baker.” He then added, “We’re happy the players are here and want to model. I’m looking forward to the show.”

Legendary sports figures, actors and others also turned up for festivities, including Steve Garvey, Reggie Smith, Norm Nixon, Naturi Naughton, Eddie Cibrian and “Bachelorette” Andi Dorfman, who popped in for the cocktail party, before heading off for another stop in Los Angeles and then a red eye to the east coast.

So how’s Dorfman’s dating life these days? “Nonexistent,” she said.
