Los Angeles Ballet Balanchine Festival and Rubies Gala Kickoff

Artistic Directors Colleen Neary and Thordal Christensen Kick Off Los Angeles Ballet Balanchine Festival and Rubies Gala

Artistic directors Colleen Neary and Thordal Christensen kicked off the upcoming Los Angeles Ballet Balanchine Festival and Rubies Gala Mar. 3 with a private party in Beverly Hills.

Larry Murphy welcomed ballet supporters to his home, while Neary and Christensen described the festival, which will run Mar. 9 to Apr. 6 with Balanchine Festival GOLD and May 11 to June 9 with Balanchine Festival RED in venues throughout Los Angeles.

A former soloist with the New York City Ballet, Neary also told stories of her experiences with George Balanchine, the company’s co-founder and one of the most famous choreographers of the twentieth century. Neary said that with the festival, Los Angeles Ballet is bringing Balanchine back to life.

Kirsten Sarkisian, co-chair of the Apr. 20 “Rubies Gala,” spoke next, promising gala guests a fun affair, including cocktails, dinner, a preview performance of the Balanchine Festival RED and dancing to John Tu’s 34-piece band, JT and California Dreamin’. The gala honors Nigel Lythgoe, producer of “American Idol” and “So You Can Dance;” and philanthropist Linda Duttenhaver.

Also joining the party were gala co-chair Lori Milken, Mike Milken, Linda May and Jack Suzar, Leslie and Jack Kavanaugh, Stephen Maguire and Jennifer Bellah Maguire, Amanda and Nick Stonnington, Susan and Marvin Rothenberg, Ricki and Marvin Ring, Joni Smith, Luanne Wells, Linda Thompson, Julie Spira, Heidi Nietert, Tanya Acker, Claudia Schloss, Annakate Chappell, and The Music Center’s programs director Renae Williams Niles among others.

Also on hand were executive director Julie Whittaker, director of development Kathy Highstrete, design director Catherine Kanner, and principal dancers Allynne Noelle and Allyssa Brose.
