“The British Invasion: The Music Then, The Fashion Now!” is this year’s theme for “Macy’s Passport Presents Glamorama,” which will take place Sept. 7 at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles.
Always a star-studded affair, this year among others expected are Nicole Richie, Sean Combs, Camila Alves, Melissa Ordway, Jessica Lu, DemarisLewis, Cheryl Burke, Ali Landry, Georgia May Jagger, Janina Gavankar, Ashley Benson, Pia Toscano and Laura Linda Bradley.
Benefiting AIDS Project LA and Project Angel Food, Macy’s Glamorama 2012 will feature performances by Robin Thicke of TV’s “Duets” and the pop duo Karmin, consisting of Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan, and Macy’s iHeartRadio Rising Star contest winners Megan & Liz.
Although the fashion show began as a small presentation for the store’s good customers, Glamorama has become an extravaganza of a show, presenting the latest fashions against a backdrop of celebrity guests, musical performances and an important cause. Fashionistas can thank Elizabeth Taylor for the evolution.
So inspired by her AIDS activism 25 years ago, when Macy’s was about to launch Taylor’s first fragrance, the company turned the fashion show into a fundraiser, which Taylor hosted each year.
“We dedicated the event to her, to educate the public and to call attention to this worldwide health crisis,” said Patrick Smith, Macy’s special events director, northwest region. “The moment Elizabeth got involved, the event became international news and every one of the news stories talked about AIDS.”
Continuing, Smith said, “She didn’t care what people said about her hair, her jewelry, her husbands. She only wanted to underscore the importance of AIDS testing. She wanted to encourage activism and get the word out to get tested.”
Taylor had many friends who pitched in with her fundraising efforts over the years. Magic Johnson and Cindy Crawford both came to co-host, Claudia Schiffer and Christy Turlington modeled and Sharon Stone dropped in several times as celebrity auctioneer.
“I think (Stone) holds the record of being best charity auctioneer in the world,” Smith said.
Tickets for Macy’s Glamorama begin at $75 for the show alone; tickets priced at $250 and more include the after-party at the California Mart. Click here for tickets and further information.
