Kathy Griffin Hosts Make Equality Reality Dinner Honoring Gloria Steinem, Salma Hayek Pinault
Kathy Griffin hosted “Make Equality Reality,” a fundraiser for Equality Now
, which advocates for the rights of women and girls around the world. The comedian deemed the subject to be so serious that she asked feminist Gloria Steinem, who along with with actress Salma Hayek Pinault was one of the evening’s honorees, if it was OK to make people laugh.
So during the Nov. 3 ceremonies at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills, Steinem spoke onstage about the significance of laughter. “It happens when you learn something. It’s an ‘aha’ — it’s like an orgasm of the brain,” she said, describing laughter as an expression of the freedom that the organization is working toward.

speaking about domestic violence, which she calls domestic terrorism. “Home is the most dangerous place for a woman,” she said. “Many more women have been killed by their husbands or boyfriends than Americans have been killed in those events (two Iraqi wars and Afghanistan) since 9/11.”

speaking about how the scarcity of women hasn’t increased their value. Forget about the laws of supply and demand. Steinem said that having fewer women in the world has resulted in kidnappings, among other undesirable consequences.
