Music Center of Los Angeles 50th Anniversary Gala
The event: The Los Angeles Music Center’s 50th anniversary celebration dinner, which immediately followed a Dec. 6 performance spectacular, handily kept up the momentum in a tent rising four stories above The Music Center Plaza in downtown L.A.
The scene: After marveling at the plaza’s familiar Jacques Lipchitz fountain, transformed for the night into a lighted video tower, guests settled into a mix of round, square and rectangular tables for a shrimp and steak dinner by Patina. As a side note: An exceptionally glamorous evening, Music Center supporters brought out the big jewels and more than a few women trailed trains behind their gowns. Carla Sands, president of the Blue Ribbon, the event’s host committee, turned up in a dazzling Monique L’hullier.
Of the celebrities, Stana Katic and Paula Abdul were, not surprisingly, standouts.
Katic, attending with her friend Edward Morrison, looked particularly stunning in a coppery gown. A regular at the Music Center, readers can click here and here and here to see Katic at other Music Center events, mingling with Los Angeles Opera’s Placido Domingo and others.
Paula Abdul, too, supports the arts and not long ago, was honored at a Los Angeles Ballet Gala – click here for details.
Others participating in the show and/or among dinner guests were Neve Campbell, Garcelle Beauvais, Kate Burton, Susan Graham, Jenna Elfman, Demian Bichir, Jane Kaczmarek, Nigel Lythgoe, Edward James Olmos, Phylicia Rashad, Judith Light, Davis Gaines, Debra Monk, Debbie Allen, John Glover, David Henry Hwang, Dale Kristien, Jennifer Leigh Warren, Tracie Bennett, Mayor Eric Garcetti, dance patron Glorya Kaufman, representatives of all four founding families: the Ahmansons, Chandlers, Disney Millers and Tapers, plus many more.
Also fabulous: Susan Graham’s aria, Matthew Bourne’s “Swan Lake” and the L.A. Dance Project onstage at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, while Gustavo Dudamel conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra via simulcast from the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
