Oceana Sea Change Summer Party

Leonardo DiCaprio Special Guest at Oceana Summer Party

DiCaprio Talks of the Beauty of the Oceans, his Joy of Diving and the Need to Protect the Planet

Leonardo DiCaprio joined those who care deeply about protecting our oceans, as a special guest at the Aug. 16 “SeaChange” Summer Party to benefit Oceana.

An eloquent speaker, here is what DiCaprio had to say:

“Allow me to get straight to the point. I truly believe that saving our oceans is the most important struggle of our time. As an avid diver I’ve been lucky enough to dive in places all over the world, including Australia, the Galapagos, Belize, and Thailand. I’ve witnessed first-hand not only the beauty that our oceans have to offer a diver, but everything they have to offer humanity.”

“We have an obligation to protect our planet and all the species that inhabit it, and that is why I’m here today to celebrate Oceana’s achievements. For me and my foundation, Oceana is an absolute no-brainer to support because they deliver tangible results and that’s what we need. We need someone to deliver tangible results in this fight.”

Back in February, Oceana announced a $3 million grant from the “Wolf of Wall Street” star’s foundation to protect threatened marine species and the ocean habitat. Recently, DiCaprio – a 4-time Academy Award nominee – also addressed the US State Department’s Our Ocean conference.

The affair, which drew 400 guests, raised $1.4 million for ocean conservation. Taking place at a private home overlooking the ocean in Laguna Beach, CA, guests included Ted Danson, Jenna Ushkowitz of “Glee,” Oscar Nunez of “The Office,” Austin Nichols of “One Tree Hill,” Dennis Haysbert of “24,” Reid Scott of “VEEP,” Rachael Harris of “The Hangover,” Laura Dern, Miranda Cosgrove.

Valarie Van Cleave and Eve Kornyei Ruffatto served as co-chairs with support from Tricia and Michael Berns, Maralou and Jerry Harrington, Carol and Dennis Berryman, Laura and Louis Rohl, Britt and Robert Meyer, Julie and Peter Hill, the Fanticolla Family, Wells Fargo, South Coast Plaza, Coast Magazine, Matanzas Creek Winery, Nolet Spirits and Commerce Printing.

Oceana is devoted to ocean conservation, directing campaigns worldwide to return oceans to former levels of abundance.
