Otis Gala Kick Off

Bob Mackie, David Meister, Ame Austin Max and More Top Designers Lend Support to Upcoming Otis Gala and Fashion Show

As an inspiring prelude to the 30th annual Otis Scholarship Benefit and Fashion Show, gala chair Shelley Reid welcomed guests to the official kick-off Apr. 4 at the Montage Beverly Hills Private Residence. Reid is a senior vice president at MGM Studios.

The affair, which comes up May 5 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, has over the years raised more than $25 million for scholarships to the Otis College of Art and Design. And this year, as before, there is considerable support from the design world.

“It’s the best fashion show west of Lincoln Center,” said Reid, referring to the current site of New York’s Fashion Week. Aside from the parade of innovative fashions, Reid said Cirque du Soleil will provide the finale.

The kick-off attracted, among others, designers Bob Mackie, David Meister, Ame Austin Max of MaxStudio/Leon Max, Betsy Zanjani of Forever 21; Kristi McKnight of Quiksilver and Christopher Wicks of English Laundry. (Mackie is the fashion legend, known for costuming such rock icons as Liza Minelli, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Whitney Houston and Cher, including Cher’s infamous bejeweled 1986 Academy Awards number.)

More faces in the crowd were actress Leigh Taylor Young, Claudia Teran, a senior vice president of the Fox Network Group; Otis College president Samuel Hoi; design department chair Rosemary Brantley and Elaine Goldsmith, who co-founded the gala along with Brantley.

While enjoying cocktails, guests watched a multi-media presentation of last year’s fashion show and checked out unique student design projects, made in conjunction with Todd Oldham, Armani Exchange, MaxStudio, David Meister, Morgane La Fay and Cirque du Soleil.

Also on the event committee: Libby Applebaum Harrison, Rod Beattie, Kendra Bollenbach, Christine Chiu, Kate Coppola, Stephanie Cota, Veronica Fernandez, Lena Hermansson, Lisa Janian, Pat Kandel, Kadi Lee, Martin Linss, Cathy Louchheim, Carolyn Mahboubi, Laura Maslon, Kirk Nix, Cynthia Occelli, Pamela Page, Stacy Phillips, Maurice Pilosof and Angela Rich. Corporate supporters have included Gucci Beverly Hills, Hermes of Paris, The Montage Beverly Hills, Neiman Marcus and Vhernier.
