Grace Jones stood a few feet beside me checking in at the Bristol in Paris, the classic French luxury hotel where “Midnight in Paris” was filmed. Donatella Versace sped through the revolving doors and slid into her limousine. I’ve run across Cameron Diaz, Diane Kruger, and “The Help” Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain and yet more actresses and other interesting people over the past few days.
It’s haute couture week in Paris.
The fashion show schedule may be more abbreviated than in years gone by, as one by one, so many designers have discontinued their high-fashion, made-to-measure lines. But there is always excitement throughout the city when the top couture houses that remain – along with some rising French fashion stars – show their collections to the lucky audiences of clients, journalists and other VIPs who get to see them.
Over the 3-day period beginning Jan. 23, I had tickets for several fashion shows, including Chanel, Giorgio Armani Privé, Jean Paul Gaultier, Valentino, Alexis Mabille, Stephane Rolland, Christophe Josse and others. I saw a lot of magnificent clothes. This season so far, the lines I saw either dazzled with bright colors or stuck to a single hue with perhaps a few variations. And as always with such high-end, made-to-measure haute couture, it was easy to see the delicate workmanship, hand-stitched details and luxurious fabrications rarely seen in other collections anywhere in the world.
Check the other posts on this website to read about the shows and keep checking back over the next week or so to see more pictures on the existing fashion show stories, plus pictures and stories from more shows.
