Race to Erase MS 2012 with Stevie Wonder David Cook and More
The Gala invitation promised “Legendary Live Entertainment” and on May 18, the “Race to Erase MS” delivered just that. In addition to a celebrity fashion show, mega-auction with 500+ items and dinner, the musical line-up included American Idol winner David Cook, the acclaimed Tenors from Canada, Fitz and the Tantrums and as a finale: recording superstar Stevie Wonder. Chaired by Nancy Davis, this year’s gala – titled “Glam Rock to Erase MS” – honored philanthropists Deb and Bill MacMillan and actress Teri Garr. Cybill Shepherd and Marg Helgenberger presented awards; Shaun Robinson and Jason Kennedy conducted the live auction; and scores more celebrities filled the room.
Among others were the glamorous La Toya Jackson, country star Clay Walker and his beautiful wife, Jessica Craig; Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom, Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner; Diana DeGarmo, Ace Young, Taylor Hicks, Pia Toscano and Jacob Lusk from “American Idol;” plus Francesca Eastwood, Carmen Electra, Jon Lovitz, Jack Osbourne, David Osmond, Lea Thompson, Shannon Elizabeth, Anna Trebuznkaya, Megyn Price, Taylor Armstrong, Kim Richards, Kathy Hilton, Camille Grammar, Camilla Luddington and many more.
Charlie Sheen, too, was on hand, tweeting from backstage, first about meeting The Tenors and calling them “epic“ and later about the finale. “Gotta love Stevie Wonder! Great way to finish a great night! Hats off to Nancy Davis for all she does to fight MS!”
La Toya Jackson tweeted about David Cook, “What an incredible event #racetoerasems,” she wrote. “Watching #American Idol winner #DavidCook perform! He’s great!”
The brilliant David Cook delivered two numbers before noting that the gala-goers looked too comfortable sitting down. “We’re going to try and fix that,” he said, following “The Last Song I’ll Write for You” and “Light On,” with a dynamic rendition of “Rock and Roll”
So by the time The Tenors delivered their exceptional “Hallelujah,“ they noted “This is a slightly wilder crowd, “ than the one they had just sang the song for, “a couple of nights ago,” namely the Queen of England.
On taking the stage, Wonder said he promised Nancy Davis a year ago that he’d be there to join the fight against MS and he did so by singing a full complement of his classics, including a fun reggae version of “Make it Easy on Yourself.” (He said he also just sang the song at this month’s presentation of the Library of Congress Gershwin Award to the song’s composers Hal David and Burt Bacharach.)
And as though Tantrums, Tenors, Cook and Wonder weren’t enough musical treats, American Idol contenders Diana DeGarmo and Ace Young, Noelle Scaggs of Fitz and the Tantrums, David Osmond and others joined Wonder onstage for “Suspicion.”
By night’s end, the stage completely filled up as La Toya Jackson, Clay Walker, Taylor Hicks, Michael Fitzpatrick of Fitz and the Tantrums, Cybill Shepherd, members of the Davis family, more celebrities, some dancing children, and a few party guests, too, joined all the others to sing along with Wonder for “Lean on Me.”
The fashion show featured The Authentic Icon Collection, inspired by “American Idol,” and the Andy Hilfiger Andrew Charles Rock ‘n Roll Collection. Lynn Palmer chaired the auction with Andrea Fiuczynski of Christie’s conducting the live portion. The night’s proceeds, totaling $1.8 million, were earmarked for the Nancy Davis Foundation for Multiple Sclerosis, dedicated to finding effective treatments and an ultimate cure for the disease.
