Jane Fonda Hosts Rape Foundation Brunch, Shares Her Personal Story

The event: Jane Fonda hosted the Rape Foundation’s annual brunch on Sept. 28, celebrating the organization’s 40th anniversary and raising funds for the Rape Treatment Center and Stuart House of Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center.

The scene: Emcee David Schwimmer called the event venue, the expansive Greenacres Estate in Beverly Hills, “this sanctuary of serenity and beauty and warmth and light,” and he thanked investor Ron Burkle for lending his home for the brunch each year for the last 20 years.

The crowd: Star power brightened the day with familiar faces, including Viola Davis of “How to Get Away With Murder,” Julius Tennon of “Small Soldiers,” Emmy Rossum of “Shameless” …

A few side notes: Every speaker at the podium – David Schwimmer, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Gail Arbarbanel – thanked Ron Burkle for lending his home for the cause.

“I don’t know how you’d feel about having 1,000 strangers over to eat in your backyard…”  Schwimmer said to the audience, referring to Burkle’s inviting nearly that many to his home each year.

Here’s how Tomlin described Fonda: “I can tell you that Jane is a philanthropist, a wonderful writer, a peacenik, an activist, a resounding resource in motivation; she is an evolutionary agent for the progression of human potential, a constant source of renewable energy for positive action, and much, much more.”

No matter that Fonda already has an abundance of commitments, here’s how she concluded her remarks: “Yes, I have a lot on my plate,” she said, adding, “I will support the Rape Treatment Center for the rest of my life.”

FYI, here’s Fonda’s blog about her mother, who suffered sexual abuse as a child.
