A Brilliant RED Colors SCR’s Opening Night

The event: South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa celebrated Opening Night for the Tony Award-winning play “RED” Jan. 29 with a post-performance shindig at Room & Board, the massive furniture showcase in nearby South Coast Plaza Village.

The scene: Mark Harelik and Paul David Story, stars of the two-person play, joined RED underwriters Sophie Hall & Lawrence Arden Cripe and Jean & Tim Weiss and the Opening Night audience for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and gourmet cupcakes, as all settled into the comfy seating areas spread throughout the 36,000 square foot showroom.

Never mind that I expected Harelik to turn up with a full head of hair, looking as he does in his many TV and movie roles. But there he was, as bald as in the play – no bald cap required. Word had it that Harelik – clearly an actor dedicated to his role – shaved the top of his head to play Rothko.

Also on hand, the play’s director David Emmes, SCR managing director Paula Tomei, Orange County Museum of Art chief executive Todd Smith and many more SCR supporters.

The play: A new assistant enters the life of artist Mark Rothko, as the brilliant abstract expressionist creates his famous suite of paintings for the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York. As they work together, the play paints a portrait of the intense and uncompromising Rothko, while exploring the nature of art and its continuing evolution toward the new.

Quote: From onstage before the performance, SCR artistic director Marc Masterson talked of his own identification with the play’s theme of art passing from one generation to another.  Masterson succeeded SCR’s founders David Emmes and Martin Benson, who, he said, “enabled the next generation to make art.”
