The event: Trojans and Bruins dispensed with their traditional USC/ UCLA sports rivalry,  when they got together to stage the Nov. 16 Rivals United for a Kure Gala at the City Club Los Angeles.

Clearly a victory for all, the affair netted $500,000 for Kure It Cancer Research, which supports underfunded cancer research programs.

The scene: Guests gathered for red carpet arrivals, a VIP reception and tailgate party, enlivened by the USC Song Girls and UCLA Spirit Squad. Soon afterwards, all ventured upstairs for silent and live auctions, followed by an awards dinner.

The honorees: Doug Karielian, alongside his children James and Alison, accepted the award on behalf of his late wife Barb Kaprielian, an avid supporters of both USC and UCLA. Gala organizers then surprised USC’s Paul McDonald and UCLA’s Matt Stevens with awards as well. The two men had been star college quarterbacks before joining the NFL, later becoming color analysts for their respective colleges and co-hosting the first Rivals United for a Kure fundraiser.
