SHARE Race Day Brings LUCK

Famed Jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr., Joins LUCK Cast and SHARE, Inc. for A Day at the Races

 

The weather was perfect for the Jan. 28 “Sunshine Millions Stakes” at Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, where cast members of HBO’s new series “LUCK” mingled with the women of SHARE, Inc. They came to celebrate “A Day at the Races,” a fundraiser benefit SHARE’s campaign to help disabled, abused and neglected children. 

But had there been a monsoon, it wouldn’t have dampened anyone’s spirits. The stamina of SHARE’s members is evidenced by their hands-on involvement with the many programs they support.

Amanda Hammers, a SHARE member and comedian, gave “Ahead With Horses,” SHARE’s equine therapy program, as an example of a program that not only helps horses, but also the charity’s children. “It’s amazing to watch how the horses strengthen children’s spirits and bodies,” she said. 

And where better a to discuss all things equine then on the Clubhouse Terrace of Southern California’s oldest racetrack?   “Luck” cast members Spencer Garrett and Chantal Sutherland called the acting abilities of the show’s horses “amazing,” especially in the way they feigned injury. A bona fide jockey herself, Sutherland raced two horses that day.

Hall of Fame jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr., added that he was thrilled by the attention the show was getting.  “It’s good for us,” he said.  “Racing needs this right now.”  

He scanned the room with a smile, looking over the diversity of race-goers from SHARE, “Luck,” and other VIPs, including SHARE past president Joanna Carson (Johnny Carson’s widow) and Miss California 2011, Noelle Freeman, rooting for their favorite thoroughbreds.  It was definitely a day for the books.
