AFI’s Tribute to Air as One-Hour Special

The night before Diane Keaton received the American Film Institute’s prestigious Life Achievement Award, South Coast Plaza honored the Oscar-winning actress and style icon both for her film career and her fashion influence.

Anyone who didn’t attend AFI’s star-studded tribute can still see the ceremony as a one-hour special on the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel July 31, along with a week’s worth of her films. Superstars coming out to fete Keaton during the ceremony included Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, Al Pacino, Jane Fonda, Steve Martin, Meryl Streep, Martin Short and many more.

Known for her unique fashion choices, Keaton first made a fashion splash back in 1977, in her role as Annie Hall, in the Oscar-winning film of the same name, in which she sported neckties, fedoras, fitted jackets, and white dress shirts.

And so, quite fittingly at the cozy June 7 affair at the Bel-Air Hotel, South Coast Plaza presented the actress with a generous selection of white dress shirts from the Costa Mesa center’s luxury retailers, including Giorgio Armani, Burberry, Max Mara, Roberto Cavalli, Marni, Anne Fontaine, and CH Carolina Herrera.

“No one wears a white dress shirt better,” said South Coast Plaza’s spokesperson Debra Gunn Downing.

In recognition of Keaton’s roots in Orange County and on the occasion of the center’s 50th year anniversary, South Coast Plaza sponsored both the June 7 celebration and the June 8 tribute.
