Stephen Schwartz Stages a Magical Preview for Princess Cruises

Stephen Schwartz conjured up an enchanting evening in Santa Clarita, when he previewed “Magic to Do,” the first of four musicals planned for Princess Cruises.

One of my all-time favorite Broadway composers, Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics for the theatrical megahits “Wicked,” “Pippin” and “Godspell.”

He is also a 4-time Grammy winner; a Tony winner for “best musical revival” for “Pippin;” and 3-time Academy Award winner, having taken home the Oscar for “best original score” for “The Prince of Egypt;” “best original song” as lyricist for “Colors of the Wind” from “Pocahontas;” and “best original song” as composer for “When You Believe” from “The Prince of Egypt.”

At the Mar. 25 dinner, Schwartz played piano, while musical talents Barrett Foa, Liz Callaway, Jill Whelan and Stephanie Hodgdon delivered an evening of show-stoppers. The theater veterans sang, among other tunes, “Magic to Do” from “Pippin,” “Popular” from “Wicked” and a heart-stopping “Meadowlark” from “The Baker’s Wife.”

Guests included Winnie Holzman, the brilliant book writer for “Wicked,” (which I’ve already seen three times – I can’t wait for the movie); Holzman’s husband, the actor Paul Dooley; and Michael Jackowitz, producer of Schwartz’ opera, “Séance on a Wet Afternoon.”

Representing Princess Cruises were Gordon Ho, senior VP of global marketing; Adrian Fischer, VP Entertainment Experience and Rai Caluor, executive VIP of guest and product development.

Schwartz said that to date, he’d been on a crossing to Barcelona and a cruise through Asia, and planned to take many more voyages in the years ahead on the Princess fleet.

As for his musical future, Schwartz said he will premiere a show about Emanuel Schikaneder, the librettist for Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” in Vienna in 2016 – in German.
