The Art of Elysium Heaven
Arquette, Colleen Atwood Honored at Heaven, Attended by Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Anna Kendrick, Stacy Keibler and a Galaxy of Young Stars
Jennifer Howell, The Art of Elysium’s founder, called David Arquette a man without ego, who wakes up wondering what he can do for someone else. Howell then presented Arquette with the 2013 “Spirit of Elysium” award for helping fulfill the charity’s mission – that of bringing art and creative expression into the lives of hospitalized children.
The Jan. 12 ceremony took place at “Heaven,” the charity’s annual gala, surrounded by a galaxy of young stars in the Second Street Tunnel in downtown Los Angeles. And lest anyone think the “The Second Street Tunnel” is the name of a nightclub, every other day it’s a real tunnel that runs beneath the 110 Freeway. (Check the gallery below for more than 35 party photos.)
Thanks to 2013 Visionary Colleen Atwood, who transformed the venue, a giant eye looked out over the ultra-glamorous crowd, projecting dreamy images of sea and sky onto the tunnel walls. Howell noted as she called Atwood to the stage that the multiple Academy-Award costume designer has now been nominated for her tenth Academy Award, this time for “Snow White and the Huntsman.”
During the cocktail hour outside the tunnel, guests stuck close to the heat lamps, as few came prepared for the surprising-chilly-for-Los-Angeles winter weather. Strapless and backless gowns were abundant.
Inside, conversations revealed that the statuesque Stacy Keibler will be hosting a new reality TV series, “Supermarket Superstars,” in which food entrepreneurs compete with new product ideas. (An actress and model, Keibler is George Clooney’s girlfriend.)
I also enjoyed speaking with Anna Kendrick, who provided a ‘wow moment’ in “Pitch Perfect,” by singing “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” while accompanying herself on a cup. She said after seeing it on youtube, she spent “hours and hours” learning the routine, which she later performed in the film.
On this night before the Golden Globe Awards, young Hollywood filled the venue. They included Arquette’s sister, Patricia Arquette, previous honorees and visionaries Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Shepard Fairey, Mark Mothersbaugh and Cameron Silver; musicians Moby, John Legend, Ben Folds, Joshua Radin and DJ Demau5; and actors Camilla Belle, Archie Panjabi, Topher Grace, Jaime King, Busy Philipps, Joe Manganiello, Francesca Eastwood and Alison Brie.
More were Ashley Madekwe and Iddo Goldberg, Thomas Sadowski and Kimberly Hope, Mena Suvari, Julianne Hough, Kelly Osbourne, George Kotsiopoulos, Hayes MacArthur, Ahna O’Reilly, Dakota Johnson, Krysten Ritter, Rachel Bilson, Perrey Reeves, Abigail Spencer, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Ali Larter, Finola Hughes, Amber Heard, Amy Smart and Shanola Hampton.
Yet more prominent guests were Zach Braff, Jessica Szohr, Christine Teigen, Ryan Kavanaugh, Kat Von D, Grace Abbott, Angelique Cinelu, Eva Amurri, Kyle Martino, Analeigh Tipton, Alicia Witt, Justin Bartha, Alicia Vikander, Ashley Hinshaw, Amaury Nolasco, Brian Geraghty, Brit Marling, Russell Young, Seth Gabel, Beth Grant, Tarina Tarantino, Brent Bolthouse, Josh Pence, Ioan Gruffudd and Krysten Ritter.
Audi sponsored the event with additional support from Cîroc Vodka and Tweezerman.
