Sam Smith Serenades Oscar Contenders at The Hollywood Reporter’s “Nominees Night”

Halfway through The Hollywood Reporter’s Feb. 8 kick-off to this year’s pre-Oscar party scene, Sam Smith stepped onto the stage to sing, according to the announcer, his Academy-Award-nominated tune, “Writing’s on the Wall.”

Yet Smith instead chose to sing “I’m Not the Only One,” saying after the final note, “I’m going to sing a few songs if that’s OK. The guy said I’d only do one, but I’m going to bore you for three, if you don’t mind.”

Of course no one minded. Nor was anyone bored. The crowd, consisting of Smith’s fellow Oscar nominees and other Hollywood VIPs, not surprisingly cheered.

Continuing, Smith said, “This is actually the first time I’ve sung for about two months now, and it feels really good to be back and singing.”

The Grammy-winner thanked the crowd, before adding, “We are here for an incredible reason — me and the amazing Jimmy Napes have been nominated for an Oscar, which is incredible… I feel like im constantly party-crashing at these events because it’s not really my world but it’s amazing to be here.”

He then sang the Oscar-nominated tune from the film, “Spectre,” already the winner of a Golden Globe, followed by an impassioned “Stay With Me.”

Among others celebrating the shindig at Spago in Beverly Hills were Sylvester Stallone, Alicia Vikander, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Topher Grace, Piers Morgan and more.
