W Magazine Fetes Stars of “Best Performances” Issue

Brie Larson Speaks of Her Difficult Role in “Room”

The event: W feted the stars who, in the magazine’s opinion, gave this year’s best performances. Held Jan. 7 at the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, the party attracted quite the star-studded crowd and not surprisingly – considering W’s expertise at spotting talent – several already had awards nominations and some went on to win Golden Globes a few days later.

Brie Larson: Just before Kristen Wiig greeted Brie Larson – later named best actress at the Golden Globes – the “Room” actress said she committed eight months to her role, that of a woman imprisoned in a windowless shed, “because there was so much to tackle – how does someone live for 7 years in this space? How do you deal with the lack of illusions, the lack of options?” she said.

“In order for this not to be overwhelming, I thought of (the role) as a sculpture, as a big slab of marble that you refine and refine.” Calling herself a perfectionist, she added, “It’s very easy for me to want to get to the truth right away, but the story is complicated and wrapped in so much. In order to get to that subtlety and to the nuances, I felt I had to work from all the angles.”

The crowd: Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, co- stars of “Carol,” joined the party, along with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Quentin Tarantino of “The Hateful Eight,” Saoirse Ronan of “Brooklyn,” Elizabeth Banks and Paul Dano of “Love and Mercy,” director David O. Russell of “Joy,” Mya Taylor of “Tangerine,” Maika Monroe of “It Follows,” Alicia Vikander of “Ex Machina,” Kirsten Dunst of “Fargo,” Lily James of “Cinderella,” Aziz Ansari of “Master of None,” Gael Garcia Benal of “Mozart in the Jungle” and Rami Malek of “Mr. Robot.”

Out in a hallway, portraits lined the walls and postcard-size photos lay scattered on the floor. Spotting a photo of himself, Jacob Tremblay scooped one up. What did he think of his turn as Larson’s 5-year old son in “Room?” “It was fun,” said the extraordinary young actor.

As most of guests packed themselves into the suite’s main room, getting to the patio or the buffet proved a nearly impossible task. Servers could barely squeeze through the crowd to bring their trays of Dom Perignon to anyone feeling champagne-starved.

Looking around at the mass of bodies – already there by 8:00 p.m. – W magazine editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi noted, “People in Los Angeles arrive early.” Tonchi also noted that it had been a good year for films, with “Carol” his personal favorite, followed by “The Big Short.”

Hosted by Tonchi, editor Lynn Hirschberg and hotelier Andre Balazs, the party also attracted Helen Mirren, Gerard Butler, Amber Valletta, Angela Lindvall, Chanel Iman, Christoph Waltz, Dylan Penn, Michelle Monaghan, Taylor Lautner, Zendaya Coleman and Zoe Kazan.
