War Horse Opening Night at the Ahmanson

Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Holland Taylor, Megyn Price, Teraji P Henson and More Stars Attend War Horse Opening Night at the Ahmanson

At the west coast premiere of “War Horse,” which took place Friday at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, a star studded audience was on hand to give the National Theatre of Great Britain production a rousing, standing ovation.

Among others present for Opening Night of the multiple Tony-Award winning play were Jesse Tyler Ferguson of “Modern Family,” Noah Wyle of “ER,” Camryn Manheim of “The Practice” and her son, Milo; Megyn Price of “Rules of Engagement,” Holland Taylor of “Two and a Half Men,” Josh Sussman (Jacob Ben Israel) and Grant Gustin (Sebastian Smythe) of “Glee,” Shohreh Aghdashloo of “House of Sand and Fog,” Connor Paolo of “Revenge,” Teraji P. Henson of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” Courtney B. Vance of “FlashForward,” Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, songwriter Diane Warren; songwriter Jason Robert Brown and his wife Georgia Stitt; Dan Fellman, a president at Warner Bros., and his wife Brynne Fellman; KTLA’s weather anchor Mark Kriski and his wife KTLA reporter Jennifer Gould; Center Theatre Group president William Ahmanson and his wife Karla Ahmanson.

At the after-party on the Music Center Plaza, party-goers enjoyed free-flowing libations, along with pasta, classic English bangers, and mashed potatoes, embellished with a variety of toppings and handsomely presented in cocktail glasses.

Holland Taylor called the play, set during World War I, a work of art. “We all respond profoundly to horses and humans, especially in a war,” she said, “but using puppetry to transform the horses into magical creatures gives the play the dimension of true art.”

Producer Chris Harper, a member of the original London production, said that the play – even after 5 years – continues to evolve. “The heart of this play is the love story between a boy and his horse,” he said, noting that although the life-sized animal puppets remain the same, each new production adapts to each stage and each venue’s language requirements. “It just keeps getting better,” he added.

And the next day, Jesse Tyler Ferguson tweeted “‘War Horse’ at @CTGLA was fantastic! Congrats to the cast and crew!”

The Los Angeles production, directed by Bijan Sheibani, is based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo and adapted by Nick Stafford and presented in association with Handspring Puppet Company. War Horse is the winner of five Tony Awards including Best Play.
