White House State Dinner LA Guests

President Obama’s White House State Dinner Celebrates British Ties – Some Ties Stretch to Los Angeles

When President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed British Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha Cameron to the Mar. 14 White House State Dinner, it was quite the special occasion for the 362 guests fortunate enough to be on the invitation list.

Some were Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; actors George Clooney, Damian Lewis of “Homeland,” Hugh Bonneville and Elizabeth McGovern of “Downton Abbey;” Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour; investor Warren Buffett; Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson; talk show host Charlie Rose; film producer Harvey Weinstein and his wife, fashion designer Georgina Chapman; and technology entrepreneur David Bohnett with his guest, Deborah Borda, president and chief executive of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

The dinner highlighted the political, economic and cultural ties between the United States and the United Kingdom. And according to David Bohnett, a friend of the White House and LA Phil chairman, there are some new ties between Los Angeles and the U.K., as next year marks the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s second European tour with music director Gustavo Dudamel and its first international associate residency with the Barbican Centre in London.

The three-concert residency will begin March 2013 and feature co-commissions by the LA Phil and the Barbican of John Adams’ new oratorio “The Gospel According to the Other Mary,” directed by Peter Sellars; and a new work by Unsuk Chin.  In addition to the world premiere of these works, the residency will also include music education via public master classes, debates, talks and an international conference.

Among other Angelenos reportedly present were Idris Elba; Chad Griffin and Jerome Fallon; Barry Karas and Bruce Green; Mai Lassiter and James Lassiter; and Dana Matthew Perlman and Hugh Kinsellagh.
